The Potter County ATV Trail system located in the Susquehanna State Forest is one of the best ATV trails in Pennsylvania, alongside Timberline/Marienville ATV Trail, that is suitable for all rider levels.

Trail Info

Potter County ATV Trail is 43 miles of smooth riding on mostly hard packed logging roads that consists of 3 loops (short and long). This is a two-way trail system that is well maintained and marked. A small portion of the trail, that has access to Lyman Run State Park (can go swimming in the Lyman Beach or checkout the Lyman Dam), closes at sunset but doesn’t prevent riding the rest of the trail.

There are a couple of play areas (no mud pits) throughout the trail as well as a couple of outhouses (relatively clean, but recommend carrying toilet paper just in case as you never know).

Here is some other useful information:

  • Only ATVs and Side by Sides(UTVs) are allowed, no Dirt Bikes.
  • Maximum Width is 64” or less to be able to fit thru gates.
  • There are no fees or permits required to ride, but must be registered with proof of liability insurance.
  • Potter County ATV Trail is open from Memorial Day weekend through the last full weekend in September

Direct Access for Campers, RVers to Potter County ATV Trail:

Potter County Family Campground

Potter County Family Campground has direct access to Potter County ATV Trail from the Denton Hill Trailhead. This is the one we always stay at and is extremely popular on holiday weekends for ATVers. Sites are booked up to 1 year in advance so if planning on staying here make sure to reserve a spot well in advance.

They have 31 full hookup sites along with some sites that only have electric/water for RVers(back in only) as well as cabins and primitive sites that are all pet friendly. There are permanent sites mixed in(not marked on the campground map), but we try to stay away from those as they can be loud/rowdy. Click here to see their campground map.

The campground also includes easy access dumping station, a couple of dumpsters for campers to dump their trash bags, as well as a small store and small playground for kids. Store, however, is limited in supplies (but not short on candy bars) so be sure to bring all supplies needed as campground isn’t really near any towns.  They do have firewood for sale and recycling (1 medium size trash can) for bottles.

There are 3 bathhouses located on the campground that each has their own individual private showers. 2 out of the 3 have multiple stalls whereas the 3rd one only has 2 stalls. The bathhouse near the back of the campground include shower, toilet, and sink in each shower plus also has a washer/dryer(pay per load) that may or may not be out of service. The bathhouse at the front of the campground has a shower side and then a restroom side (one for men and one for women).

Another option is the Lyman Run State Park that has direct access to Potter County ATV Trail from the Lyman Trailhead. We do not stay here as had to trailer ATVs to the Trailhead rather than being able to ride straight to the Trailhead.  However, new for 2019 they are piloting a program for the Lower Campground that allows ATVers to ride to straight to the trail head. This pilot program is going from 2019-2020 afterwards they will decide if will remain open or not.

Looking at the Lyman Run State Park site for campsites, they have 36 sites of which for the Lower Campground only 4 sites for Tents and 12 for RVers(combination of pull through and back in only that are Electric only) that are all pet friendly(pets are not allowed in sandy beach area or swimming area).

From the website appears they have bath house, showers, dumping station, and nearest camp store is within 10 miles but the campground map does not provide any type of details on where these are located at and only point out the camp site locations.
